Jacques de Thier

Jacques de Thier (born September 15, 1900 in Heusy, Verviers , † October 21, 1993 in Brussels ) was a Belgian diplomat .

Life

Jacques de Thier studied law at the University of Liège . From December 1932 to May 1935 and from October 1936 to February 1938 he was accredited at the Belgian Embassy in Berlin . He was then promoted to secretary of the embassy; from 1940 to April 1944 he was in Washington, DC as Counselor.

From April 1944 to December 15, 1946 he was chargé d'affaires in Madrid . Jacques de Thier negotiated with the government of Francisco Franco about the extradition of Léon Degrelle . Paul-Henri Spaak had publicly made the extradition of Degrelle as a prerequisite for sending an ambassador.

From 1948 to 1955 Jacques de Thier was Consul General in New York City . In February 1957, as ambassador to Mexico City , he declared that the crushing of the Hungarian uprising could not be compared with the French doctrine in the Algerian war .

From 1958 to 1962 he was Ambassador to Ottawa , Canada , and from 1962 to 1965 Ambassador to the Court of St James’s .
