The Samedan – Pontresina railway line , also known as the Pontresiner line , is a meter-gauge Swiss narrow-gauge railway operated by the Rhaetian Railway (RhB). The line located in the Upper Engadine connects Samedan with Pontresina and thus represents the link between the Albula Railway and the Bernina Railway. The railway discussed here is often included on the Engadine line from Bever to Scuol-Tarasp , with which it is closely linked in operational terms. The Samedan – Pontresina railway is part of the RhB main network, The mileage therefore has its zero point in Landquart .

history

The railway line was opened on July 1, 1908, together with the Pontresina– Morteratsch section of the Bernina Railway Company. Until July 1, 1909, it was the only connection between the main RhB network and the Bernina line, which was already electrified (with direct current ). In 1913 the Pontresiner line was also electrified, but with 11 kV 16⅔ Hz alternating current .

business

To this day, Pontresina station is a two-system station. The main network trains from Samedan occupy tracks 1 and 2, the Bernina trains on tracks 4 to 7. Track 3 has a switchable contact line and is used, for example, by the Bernina Express from Chur to Tirano and by the so-called Heidiexpress . The trains enter and leave the vehicle, as does the change of locomotive, using the power system required in each case.
