Aroostook River Railroad

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Aroostook River Railroad is a former railway company in Maine ( United States ).

The New Brunswick Railway planned to connect its line, which ran parallel to the border between Canada and the USA, to the city of Caribou in Maine by a branch line. The Aroostook River Railroad was then founded in 1874 for the route section located in the USA. In 1875 the line from Tobique (New Brunswick) to Fort Fairfield (Maine) was opened, the following year to Caribou. 24 kilometers of the initially narrow-gauge line, namely the section from Caribou to the state border, belonged to the ARR. The gauge change from Cape gauge (1067 mm) to standard gauge (1435 mm) took place in 1881. On December 2, 1881, the line was extended by 23 kilometers to Presque Isle . The entire Aroostook Junction – Presque Isle railway ran along the south bank of the Aroostook River .

As early as January 12, 1878, the New Brunswick Railway had leased the railway company. Since this was taken over by the Canadian Pacific Railway on July 1, 1890 , the leasing contract with ARR was also transferred to this company. From that day on, the Aroostook River Railroad was run as a subsidiary of the NBR. The line was closed in 1993.
