Under coach Heinz Sewina , Pfahl made his debut on the first round matchday, August 15, 1971, in a 3-1 away win against VfR Neuss in the Regionalliga West. Attacker Uwe Kolitsch had scored two goals and the midfield of the game association was occupied by Pfahl, Dieter Walter and Manfred Friedrich . On the fourth match day, September 1, 1971, a 1-0 home win against the eventual runner-up Rot-Weiss Essen was successful . Pfahl had to deal with Günter Fürhoff and Diethelm Ferner in particular in the RWE midfield . On January 23, 1972, the sovereign champion Wuppertaler SV - 60: 8 points - prevailed with a narrow 2: 1 victory in front of 11,000 spectators in Erkenschwick. Pfahl dealt with WSV players Bernhard Hermes , Herbert Stöckl and Heinz-Dieter Lömm in the opposing midfield. The round ended for the team from Stimberg Stadium with a 3-1 home win on May 14, 1972 against Eintracht Gelsenkirchen ; Pfahl had achieved the 1-0 lead. The 22:12 home points were the basis of sixth place in the table and the man from Zweckel had completed 26 league appearances and scored two goals. Due to injury, in the last two years of the old second-rate regional league 1972/73 and 1973/74 only 16 (1) further league appearances for stake were added.

In the first year of the newly introduced 2nd Bundesliga, 1974/75 , the defensive all-rounder was back with 30 (1) appearances in the Erkenschwicker line-up. Under the coach Heinz Murach (until November 1974) and his successor Fritz Langner , the black-reds took 16th place. The debut game in the 2nd division on August 4, 1974 with the 2-1 victory at Olympia Wilhelmshaven denied Pfahl as a left defender. On the eighth match day, September 22, 1974, he again contributed a goal as a defender to the 5-2 home win against Fortuna Cologne. With the use on the 38th matchday, June 15, 1975, in the 0-2 defeat at FC St. Pauli, Pfahl said goodbye to paid football.
