history

Back straight with a marathon goal

The first groundbreaking took place in 1929 near the Ewald colliery . Most of the work was done by the unemployed, volunteer farm workers and labor service workers. On September 10, 1934, after five years of construction, it was inaugurated by Hans von Tschammer und Osten . At that time the stadium had a capacity of 25,000 spectators. At that time it was still called Hindenburg-Kampfbahn in honor of Reich President Paul von Hindenburg . From 1943 to 1953 first-class football was played at Stimberg , initially in the Gauliga, then from 1946 in the Oberliga West .

Despite the mining crisis that began in the 1950s, which also plunged many clubs that benefited from the mines, such as SpVgg Erkenschwick, the stadium was modernized in the 1970s due to new requirements by the DFB and provided with a covered grandstand. At the time, it held 1,500 seats and 4,000 standing places and was inaugurated in 1976. The capacity fell to around 22,000.

Due to new safety regulations and minor renovations in February 2011, the permitted capacity fell to an officially 14,380 spectator (of which 880 covered seats and a total of 13,500 standing places). The tartan track was renewed in 2012.

The record number of spectators in the Stimberg Stadium is 22,000. It was achieved in 1950 in a league game against FC Schalke 04 and in 1967 in the DFB Cup round of 16 against FC Bayern Munich . In 2012, both a semi-final and the final of the German A-Junior Championship took place in the Stimberg Stadium. The 2-1 final victory of FC Schalke 04 against FC Bayern Munich was seen by 13,000 spectators.

Back straight in the friendly against Borussia Dortmund (9,000 spectators).
