The real shoulder runner ( Pterostichus oblongopunctatus ) is a beetle from the family of ground beetles (Carabidae).

features

The beetles reach a body length of 9 to 12 millimeters. Their body is black in color and has a greenish or bronze tinge. The upper wings ( elytra ) are longitudinally grooved and have four to seven, usually five, deep pore points in the third stripe. The similar four-pit grave beetle ( Pterostichus quadrifoveolatus ) usually only has three such points. The splints ( tibiae ) and tarsi are colored brown-red. The pronotum is shaped like a heart and has two wide, slit-like notches at its base.

Occurrence

The animals occur in Europe and Asia , east to Japan and north beyond the Arctic Circle . They live in dry or slightly damp deciduous and coniferous forests , especially on acidic humus soils . You can find them from the lowlands to heights of about 2000 meters in rotten tree stumps or under bark and stones. They are very common.

Way of life

The nocturnal beetles mate in spring, the new generation hatches in autumn and overwinters in moss, under leaves or in rotten wood. The larvae also live in moss or leaves.
