The Harpalinae are a global subfamily of ground beetles (Carabidae). With around 20,000 species in 30 tribes , it is the most species-rich group of ground beetles. There are 417 known species and subspecies in Europe.
features
Beetle
The lateral pits of the mandibles are hairless. The first tarsal links of the front legs are never widened on one side in the males. The indentations for the hips ( coxes ) of the front legs are single or multiple perforated. The upper wings are fully developed or truncated at the tip, as is the case with the Odacanthini and Lebiini tribes .
Larvae
Due to the extremely high number of species of the Harpalinae, the larvae show a wide range of morphological differences. The larvae of all Harpalinae have in common that the secondary hairs of the ligula are reduced to a pore. As with the Trechinae and Brachininae, the muscles of the antennae are arranged in a crossed manner. A membrane-like band is formed ventrolaterally on the stipes in many tribes. Branches that correspond most to the basic plan of the subfamily, such as some species of the Pterostichini and Platynini , are very similar to the Trechinae, but differ from this group by the short Lacinia and double claws.
Way of life
The way of life of the different subgroups of the Harpalinae is very different due to their diversity.
