The large broad beetle ( Abax parallelepipedus ) is a beetle from the family of ground beetles (Carabidae).
features
The large broad beetle is a 16 to 21 millimeter large, wide, matt deep black ground beetle. Its wings are longitudinally grooved. On the pronotum there are two elongated, unbent pits on both sides from the base to the front, and a groove in the middle. The pronotum becomes narrower towards the front, at the base it is only a little narrower than the wing. The underside of the last links of the tarsi are hairy.
Occurrence
The animals occur in Europe to the south of Scandinavia mainly in moist forests, in clearings and in hedges in the foreland and at high altitudes up to about 2,000 meters. They prefer loamy or chalky soil and especially beech forests. You can find them from April to September under moss, stones, bark of dead wood or in rotten tree stumps.
Way of life
The adults and their larvae predatory feed on insects and snails. After laying, the females cover their eggs with a layer of soil. The larvae can be found under stones and in modern wood. The larvae overwinter, but so do the adults.
