Calodromius spilotus is a beetle from the family of ground beetles (Carabidae).
features
Calodromius spilotus is one of two representatives of the genus Calodromius in Central Europe. The other species is Calodromius bifasciatus . The beetles are 3.5–4.6 mm long. The head is shiny black. The temples are about as long as the eyes. The red-brown to brown-black colored pronotum is about the same length as it is wide. The pronotum is concave in front of the relatively sharp, right-angled rear corners. The label is black. The black wing covers have two yellowish shoulder spots and two yellowish apical spots. The apical spots are missing in the rare form Calodromius spilotus var basalis Schilsky , 1888. The wing-coverts show a dark basal triangle. The antennae , mandibles and legs are colored yellow-brown.
distribution
The species is represented in almost all of Europe. It is also found in the British Isles . In Central Europe it is common in the south. The distribution area extends in the south to North Africa, in the east over Asia Minor to the Middle East .
Way of life
During the day, the nocturnal beetles hide under the bark of various conifers, in particular pine ( Pinus ) and spruce ( Picea ), as well as various deciduous trees (including apples ( Malus )). The beetles are mainly observed in the winter half of the year between September and March. A mating of the beetle species has been documented in winter. The beetle species forms one generation per year. The adults of the new generation appear in late summer.
