The Trechinae are a very large subfamily of the ground beetles (Carabidae) that is found worldwide , but they are probably not monophyletic . There are 2272 known species and subspecies in Europe.
features
The tarsi of the front legs are often widened on one side towards the body of the males. The epimeron of the mesothorax is wide or narrow.
The larvae of the Trechinae correspond in physique to the basic plan of the more highly developed ground beetles. Their body is slightly flattened and has parallel sides. The head is roughly square and has six point eyes ( ocelli ) on the sides , which are arranged in two rows. In species that live in caves, their numbers are reduced. The thorax has a large pronotum and an almost equally small meso- and metanotum . The latter two are keeled in front. The legs are slender and most genera have only one claw. The structure of the first to eighth abdominal segments is almost the same. The tergites are keeled in front. The sternites consist of a large central plate and smaller, anterior, outer and inner laterosternites arranged in pairs. The ninth abdominal segment is reduced in size and has sternite plates that have grown together. Its tergite is fused with the Urogomphi . The tergite of the tenth abdominal segment is cylindrical and directed downwards. The larvae of the Apotomini, Melaenini and Cymbiotonini tribes are still unknown.
Way of life
The way of life of the different subgroups of the Trechinae is very different.
Systematics and distribution
It is still unclear whether the tribes Patrobini, Broscini, Psydrini and the genus Apotomus should be added to the subfamily or not. The provisional attribution of the Melaenini and Cymbionotini tribes is also questionable.
