The barnacles , gyratory beetles , or wide- necked beetles ( Calathus ) are a genus of beetles within the family of ground beetles (Carabidae). In Europe, the genus is represented with 82 species, of which nine species occur in Central Europe.
features
The beetles are between 6 and 14 millimeters long and usually have a black-colored body that is elongated and oval in shape. Their forehead has no red spots, which distinguishes them from the escape beetles ( Dolichus ). Your pronotum is usually rectangular in shape. The claws are serrated like a comb on the inside, the epileurs of the wings are not crossed in front of the tip. The tarsi and splints (tibiae) of the hind legs are about the same length.
Occurrence and way of life
The animals live in forests and fields, especially on sandy soils. They are common across Central Europe between March and October . The overwintering takes place as a larva , the adults hatch in spring.
