Demetrias atricapillus , also known as the black- headed barnacle runner or the common stalk runner , is a beetle from the family of ground beetles (Carabidae).

features

The small ground beetles reach a body length of 4.5–6 mm. The yellow-brown beetles have a black head and a red pronotum . They also have a slightly blackened wing seam and, in rare cases, a brown-black triangular blemish at the base of the wing. The claws have 3 larger teeth.

distribution

The beetle species is found in the Palearctic . It is widespread in Europe. Their occurrence extends in the north to southern Scandinavia and the British Isles including Ireland. The distribution area also includes the Mediterranean and adjacent North Africa as well as Asia Minor and the Middle East .

The species is common and widespread in Western Europe, becoming rarer towards the east. In Germany there are only a few finds for the east of Bavaria and Brandenburg. In Berlin, the first and so far only evidence comes from 2014. From Romania, Slovakia and Lithuania only individual evidence is available.

Way of life

The beetles can be found from spring to autumn. The species prefers loamy meadows, ruderal areas, floodplains and dunes, often near stagnant water, as habitat. The beetles usually stay under leaves or on tufts of grass. They have good flight ability and, unusual for ground beetles, also climbing ability, so that they not only live on the ground, but are often found hunting in the vegetation layer. They mainly eat aphids . The beetle species overwinters as an imago.

As a predator of aphids, the species is considered to have potential use as a beneficial insect in agriculture. Demetrias atricapillus is often one of the most common ground beetle species in fields. It winters in strips of field margins, so that their facility has been proposed to promote the density of beneficial insects. Due to the good flight ability of the species, which is often found flying, the assignment of the individuals in a marginal strip to the respective neighboring fields does not appear to be guaranteed.
