Harpalus rufipes syn. Pseudoophonus rufipes , also known as the hairy fast runner , is a beetle from the family of ground beetles (Carabidae).
features
The beetles are 11-16 mm long. They have a matt black body. The legs and antennae are colored red-brown. The pronotum has sharp, right-angled back corners. The elytra and the base of the pronotum are covered with fine yellowish hairs.
distribution
The species is native to the Palearctic . It is widespread in Europe. It is also common in Central Europe. In the north it occurs as far as Scotland, central Norway, central Sweden and northern Finland. The species is also found in the Azores and North Africa. In the east, the distribution area extends to western China. In North America the species was introduced and occurs there in the northeast of the United States and in the southeast of Canada.
Way of life
The eurytopic beetle species is considered a culture follower . It populates diverse biotopes, especially loamy fields, ruderal areas , sandy banks and dry forest edges. The beetles not only hunt other small animals (snails, worms, small insects), but also eat the seeds of various umbelliferae . The beetles eat the nuts of strawberries and can thus cause considerable damage to strawberry crops. The adult beetles are active from April to November. The eggs are laid in summer (July to September). The larvae of Harpalus rufipes go through three stages of development. They feed u. a. from the seeds of the white goosefoot ( Chenopodium album ). The larvae overwinter in the ground and pupate in spring.
