The black-headed broad -necked maroon or red-necked barnacle ( Calathus melanocephalus ) is a species from the ground beetle family .

The animals are between six and eight millimeters long. Both the wing covers and the head are shiny black, the thorax , the legs and the antennae are red. In the higher mountains of the Alps , however, the red color of the neck is missing. The overall shape of the body is oval, as the chest is about as wide as the abdomen . There are longitudinal grooves on the wing covers. The legs are relatively long, the antennae are thread-shaped.

The species is widespread in Europe , Asia and North Africa . They are mainly found in open areas, such as fields, but sometimes also in open forests.

The nocturnal animals hunt small insects on the ground, which are sucked out and digested before the mouth. During the day, the beetles hide under stones or in flowers and mushrooms. The larva lives in the ground and feeds similarly to the beetle. It pupates after several moults. The finished beetle hatches from the pupa.
