Career

1. FC Cologne, 1967 to 1970

Hermes joined the Bundesliga team of 1. FC Köln in 1967 from BC Quadrath-Ichendorf . It was Willy Multhaup's second year as coach and at the end of the round, FC came fourth behind 1. FC Nürnberg, Werder Bremen and Borussia Mönchengladbach. Since Hermes was still an amateur in the first year, the left-footed player made his debut on March 20, 1968 at the international match in Grieskirchen against Austria in the German amateur national team . He was substituted on for Horst Pohl and tried to bring the top three Helmut Bergfelder , Paul Alger and Werner Thelen into play. On the 31st round match day, on April 26, 1968, Hermes made his debut in a 2: 3 away defeat against MSV Duisburg in the Bundesliga. With Heinz Simmet and Wolfgang Overath he formed the Cologne midfield. Cologne won the DFB Cup in this round , but Hermes was not used in this competition. In his second season, 1968/69, he made eleven appearances (1 goal) under the new coach Hans Merkle , but Cologne slipped into the lower midfield with 13th place. On January 22, 1969, he was in the DFB Cup in the 0-1 defeat at VfB Stuttgart for Cologne. In the European Cup Winners' Cup , he played in the two games against ADO Den Haag (1-0, 3-0) and was substituted on March 5, 1969 in a 2-1 home win against Randers Freja for Heinz Flohe . In its third year, 1969/70, FC moved up to fourth place, Hermes played in eight other Bundesliga games. With Manfred Manglitz and Bernd Rupp , Cologne had noticeably strengthened.

For three years, Bernhard Hermes tried to assert himself at 1. FC Köln (20-1), which he did not succeed, so he moved to the second-rate regional football league for Wuppertaler SV in the 1970/71 season.

Wuppertal, 1970 to 1978

On August 16, 1970 Hermes made his debut at WSV in the away game against Fortuna Düsseldorf, with a 3: 4 starting defeat, in the Regionalliga West. On the third match day, August 30, the team of coach Buhtz also lost the second away game, now with 0: 1 at VfL Bochum. But that was it with defeats in the first half of the season; The Oberbergische finished the first half of the season on December 6, 1970 with 28: 6 points and the change of club had paid off for Hermes. He was part of the regular cast and played for first place with Wuppertal. Wuppertal ended the season with 55:13 points, Hermes had scored six goals in 30 league appearances. Bochum and Düsseldorf had won the three-way battle at the top of the table with 56:12 points each, ahead of Wuppertal in third place. For the Buhtz protégés it was in the year of the European Football Championship 1971/72 to try again to move up to the Bundesliga. An impressive start in the first half of the season was achieved with 31: 3 points. The later runner-up, Rot-Weiss Essen, was outclassed 5-0 on October 31, 1971 at Essen's Hafenstrasse; the former red and white Günter Pröpper scored four goals in front of 30,000 spectators. With a 7: 1 home win on matchday 34, May 14, 1972, against DJK Gütersloh, the championship was brought in with 60: 8 points, six points ahead of runner-up RWE and even 12 points ahead of Fortuna Cologne in third place. Hermes, he usually formed the WSV midfield with Jürgen Coal , Herbert Stöckl and Heinz-Dieter Lömm , had played all 34 rounds and scored two goals. Günter Pröpper took the top scorer's crown with 52 goals. The promotion round to the Bundesliga was a demonstration of the strength of the western champion, who won all eight games and achieved promotion to the Bundesliga with 16-0 points. Here, too, playmaker Hermes was active in all eight games (1 goal).

In their first year in the Bundesliga, 1972/73 , the promoted team even made it into the UEFA Cup with fourth place (40:28 points) . Hermes had again played all 34 games and scored three goals. Even after relegation in 1975 he stayed with the WSV. In the second year of the Bundesliga, 1973/74 , Wuppertal could no longer hold the three-year sporting high and crashed dramatically in the table. As close as possible, the WSV was able to hold onto the same points against relegated SC Fortuna Köln - both teams had collected 25:43 points. Hermes had played in 32 BL games (1 goal). With a disappointing 12:56 points, Wuppertal was relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga in the 1974/75 season. Even the change of coach in October 1974 from Buhtz to János Bédl hadn't changed that. The pillars of the era of success were getting on in years and the tight finances prevented the necessary qualitative reinforcements. Hermes only came on nine missions. Even after relegation at WSV, he stayed in the 2nd Bundesliga and was a regular player as in the successful years. Under coach Diethelm further the fifth place was achieved in 1975/76 and playmaker Hermes had completed 37 league games with two goals. The next round, 1976/77 , Herbert Burdenski was now working as a trainer, Hermes and colleagues even played for second place. The champions and direct climbers in the Bundesliga was FC St. Pauli, Arminia Bielefeld prevailed on the home straight against Wuppertal, who came in third place, and was runner-up. The relegation games, however, decided the southern runner-up in 1860 Munich for himself and rose to the third division in the Bundesliga. Hermes had played all 38 league games for the WSV and scored two goals. In the third year in the 2nd Bundesliga, 1977/78, it didn't work out in Wuppertal, and the reliable game designer couldn't change that. Three coaches wore the WSV in this round: Erhard Ahmann opened, he was replaced by his predecessor Burdenski from November 1977 and this in turn in March 1978 by Bernd Hoss . The result was 11th place. After seven games in the 1978/79 round for Wuppertaler SV, Hermes signed a new contract with Viktoria Köln, who had been promoted to the second division, and moved back to Cologne.

Viktoria Cologne, 1978 to 1981

Hermes then played his last three years in professional football again in Cologne , this time with SC Viktoria Cologne in the 2nd Bundesliga North. In March 1979, Viktoria replaced the promotion coach Fritz Pott with Ernst-Günter Habig and held the class with just 16th place. Hermes had scored five goals in 30 league appearances for his new club. In his second year, 1979/80 , it went way up in the table, Viktoria finished fourth with 46:30 points. Players like Bernd Helmschrot (goalkeeper), Jürgen Jendrossek , Frank-Michael Schonert and Wolfgang Lüttges had contributed to this upswing under coach Habig alongside Hermes (29-2). In the last season of the 2nd Bundesliga, which was played in two seasons - north and south, Viktoria Köln was only 11th in 1980/81 and was therefore not qualified for the single-track 2nd Bundesliga for the 1981/82 season. Hermes had played another 27 league games and scored five goals. After that round, he ended his career in paid football.
