The Matfors – Vattjom railway was originally a narrow-gauge Swedish railway line between Vattjom in Västernorrland County and Matfors . She had a track width of 1067 mm and was built by Sundsvalls Järnvägsaktiebolag .

history

With the construction of the Sundsvall – Torpshammar railway between 1872 and 1875, a three-kilometer branch line from Vattjom to Matfors was built. This route was extended to Ljungan by a rail connection of one kilometer in order to load wood onto the railway there.

The concession for the branch line was granted on November 29, 1872. The line was opened for freight traffic on November 11, 1874 and for general traffic on July 13, 1875.

Sundsvalls Järnvägsaktiebolag

In 1885 the Swedish state bought the main line between Sundsvall and Torpshammar for 3.6 million kroner in order to re- gauge it and operate it in standard gauge . Like the branch line Vattjom – Matfors, the vehicles remained in the possession of Sundsvalls Järnvägsaktiebolag . However, it was agreed that Statens Järnvägar would handle the traffic on the narrow-gauge branch line. To this end, the goods were reloaded at Vattjom station.

At the beginning of 1887 Sundsvalls Järnvägsaktiebolag owed 540,268.67 kroner . During the year the company tried to sell the route and vehicles, but could not find any interested parties.

Matfors AB

On November 30, 1889, a buyer was found in Matfors AB who took over the route with all vehicles. On December 31, 1889, the company received permission to provisionally reopen the line to general traffic. The official transfer of the concession took place on October 17, 1890, after which Sundsvalls Järnvägsaktiebolag was dissolved.

Tuna factory stock company

1892 went Matfors AB into bankruptcy . The railway line was taken over by Tuna fabriksaktiebolag at an auction on November 24, 1892 .

Tuna Järnvägsaktiebolag

From January 1, 1903, the route was continued to be operated by the newly founded Tuna Järnvägsaktiebolag . This was merged into today's Svenska Cellulosa Aktiebolaget , SCA, in 1929 .

Remodeling and setting

In 1919, the line was converted to standard gauge with 1435 mm gauge, and operations began on January 16, 1920. Passenger traffic on the route between Matfors and Vattjom ceased on October 15, 1931. On October 12, 1931, freight traffic between Matfors and Runsvik was suspended; this section of the route was dismantled in 1934.

The freight traffic between Matfors and Vattjom by the SJ ended on February 1, 1967. In the same year, the rails were removed in Matfors. The rest of the route was dismantled in 1980. Today the embankment is used as a cycle and walkway.
