Matfors is a place ( Tatort ) in the Swedish province of Västernorrlands län , in the historical province (landskap) Medelpad .

location

Matfors belongs to the municipality of Sundsvall and within this since January 1, 2016 to the district of Tuna, named after the church located a little south of the village. With over 3400 inhabitants (2015), the place is the fourth largest town in the municipality. It is about 60 km as the crow flies southwest of the provincial capital Härnösand and about 15 km west-southwest of the center of Sundsvall on both sides of the Ljungan River . This flows through Lake Marmen south of the village (downstream) and flows almost 20 km east into the Bottensee .

A little north of Matfors is Vattjom station at kilometer 561 (kilometer reading from Stockholm via Ånge ) on the Sundsvall – Storlien (Mittbanan) railway . The line was opened on this section in 1874 as a narrow-gauge railway in Cape Gauge, but was converted to standard gauge in 1882 . From 1874/1875 Matfors was connected to Vattjom via a short branch line, which was initially also built as a narrow-gauge railway and converted to standard gauge in 1919/1920; passenger traffic ceased in 1931 and all operations in 1967.

On the northern outskirts of the town also runs the European route 14 , which largely follows the railway line and connects Sundsvall via Östersund with Trondheim in Norway .

history

For a long time the place was in the shadow of the village of Lucksta about 6 km south of the Marmen . With the construction of a bridge over the Ljungan, Matfors became more important. At the end of the 18th century, a hydropower sawmill was built there, and later an ironworks , called Matfors Bruk. In 1919 a paper mill started operations, later owned by Svenska Cellulosa AB (SCA) until it closed in 1990 .

Administratively, the place initially belonged to the parish of Tuna socken , from which the rural community of the same name (landskommun) emerged in 1862 , the administration of which was located in the largest village of Matfors. In 1963, the community was combined with the rural community Attmar to the south to form the rural community of Matfors. This went on in 1974 in the municipality of Sundsvall.

Attractions

South of the village on the north shore of Lake Marmen is the Tuna Church, built between 1776 and 1778, with a wooden bells from 1746. The manor house built by Matfors Bruk in 1848 has been preserved in the village.

Sports

The Matfors IF association , which was founded in 1901 as Thule SK and is active in football, skiing and tennis, is based in Matfors . His women's soccer team played from 1978 to 1981 in the top Swedish league (predecessor of Damallsvenskan ).
