Agartala ( Bengali : আগরতলা , Āgartalā ) is the capital of the Indian state of Tripura . It is two kilometers from the border with Bangladesh and has a population of around 400,000 (2011 census).

history

At the time of British colonial rule, Agartala was the capital of the Indian princely state of Tripura . In 1949 he joined India, which had become independent in 1948. In 1971 Tripura became a separate state within India with Agartala as its capital.

description

Agartala is the trading center of the otherwise agricultural area. The city has several temples and palaces. It is mostly inhabited by Bengali, which gives it the character of the Bengali culture, especially through festivals such as Durga Puja . However, tribal populations are increasingly moving from the countryside to the city.

In recent years, the city's transport links have been increasingly improved. In 2008 the railway line between Lumding in Assam and Kumarghat in Tripura was extended to Agartala. In the following years this line was converted from meter gauge to Indian broad gauge . On January 13, 2016, the first broad-gauge passenger train and on February 22, 2016, the first commercial broad-gauge freight train reached Agartala station. Both events were festive. A railway connection is to be established between Agartala and Akhaura on the other side of the border in Bangladesh by the end of 2017, so that the northeastern Indian states will have a railway connection to the railway network of Bangladesh .

Agartala is the seat of the diocese of Agartala . The campus of the University of Tripura ( Tripura University ), founded in 1987, is located in Suryamaninagar about 10 kilometers from the city center .
