Life

Naresh Mitra studied law at Calcutta University and then became an actor at the Minerva Theater, where he was successful on stage with the play Chandragupta in 1922 . In 1923 he played at the Star Theater in Karnarjun and also appeared in plays in other theater groups, mostly as a villain.

He made his film debut as a director and actor in 1922 with Andhare Alo , whom he directed with Sisir Bhaduri . This film adaptation of a play by Sharatchandra Chattopadhyay was staged like a stage with painted backdrops. Naresh Mitra played and directed many literary adaptations by Bengali writers until the 1930s . In 1923 he shot Manbhanjan after Tagore - his films Nauka Dubi (1932) and Gora (1938) were also based on plays by Tagore - and in 1928 the first film version of Sharatchandras Debdas , in which the later director Nitin Bose led the camera and the director and actor Phani Burma took the title role. Naresh Mitra directed until the 1950s, when the thirties stage style of his films was no longer in keeping with the times, despite the participation of star Uttam Kumar - Bou Thakuranir Hat (1953) and Annapurnar Mandir (1954).

Mitra appeared as an actor in Priyanath Gangulys Durgesh Nandini (1927) based on the novel of the same name by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay and Modhu Bose's Tagore film adaptation Giribala (1930). In the 1940s he played among others under Sailajananda Mukherjee ( e.g. Shahar Theke Dooray , 1943). He had his last role in 1968.

Towards the end of his life, Naresh Mitra dealt with the Bengali folk theater form Jatra .
