Mehsana or Mahesana is a fast growing Indian city ​​with about 200,000 inhabitants in the north of the state of Gujarat .

location

Mehsana is located about 75 km (driving distance) north of the city of Ahmedabad at an altitude of about 80 meters above sea level. d. The town of Patan is another 50 km to the northwest. Mehsana has a train station on the Jaipur - Ahmedabad line.

The Gujarati and Hindi speaking population consists of approximately 80% Hindus , 15% Muslims , 5% Jains , Christians, Sikhs , Parsees, and others. As is customary with Indian censuses, the male population is about 10% higher than the female population.

history

In the 11th and 12th centuries the region belonged to the Solanki Empire. The history of the city goes back to the 13th and 14th centuries. Century back - a large archway ( torana ), which has now disappeared and was built by Raja Mehsaji Chavda , came from this time . After India's independence in 1947, the city came to the sprawling state of Bombay , which in 1960 was divided into the newly created states of Gujarat and Maharashtra .

Attractions

The comparably new and modern city has no major sights. The Simandhar Swami Jain Temple , located on the outskirts and dedicated to a 'present' Tirthankara , is a medieval-style building from the 20th century. The village of Modhera, about 25 km to the west, with the famous Surya temple from the 11th century and the connected stepwell, is easy to reach from Mehsana by bus or taxi.
