The Christinehamn – Sjöändan railway was the second railway line built in Sweden after the Fryksta – Lyckan railway was built in 1849 . As Pferdebahn executed narrow-gauge railway with the gauge of 1099 mm connected the Bergslagskanalen with the port of Kristinehamn .
The construction of the railway line began in 1849 and was put into operation in 1850. This made it possible to transport iron ore from the transshipment point in Sjöände at the southern end of the Bergsjön, which is integrated into the Filipstads Bergslag Canal and Norsbäcks Canal , to Kristinehamn and from there to ship it via the Vänern or by sea.
The route starting in Sjöändan led 1.8 km uphill to Sandköping. The wagons were pulled up by horses. There, the brakemen took over the loaded wagons and let them run the nine-kilometer route to the port in Kristinehamn. The emptied wagons were either empty or loaded with other goods and brought back to Sandköping by horses over the longer stretch of the route, which was provided with passing points.
In 1858 the operating company acquired two steam locomotives and in 1864 the vehicle fleet consisted of three steam locomotives, 49 freight cars and six passenger cars. Seven pairs of trains a day were the norm, two of which carried passenger cars. In Sjöändan there was daily connection to the passenger and tug boat Franz von Schéele from Filipstad .
In total, the following steam locomotives were procured:
