Munktells Mekaniska Verkstad was founded in 1832 by Johan Theofron Munktell in a machine shop in Eskilstuna . He began making machines and tools for the city's emerging industries. In the 1850s he manufactured traction engines , and in 1859 the first threshing machine was built in Sweden.

In 1879 the company was converted into a stock corporation and was called Munktells Mekaniska Verkstads AB from that time on . After Munktell's death on July 4, 1887, his son Johan Theofron Munktell jr. and the son of his sister Theofron Boberg run the company.

The last locomotive was built in 1893. From 1913 onwards, tractors became the main product of the factory, with the first tractor with the type designation 30-40 weighing 8.3 tons.

Sweden's first locomotive

Working copy of FÖRSTLINGEN

The first Swedish locomotive was built in 1852 under the direction of Harald Asplund . The FÖRSTLINGEN had a B wheel arrangement and a track width of 891 mm. The client was Fredrik Sundler, who built the Norbergs järnväg . The machine delivered on June 2, 1853 was a faulty design that could not be used on this route. In the autumn of the same year it was converted to standard gauge and then used on the Nora – Ervalla järnväg , for which Sundler was also responsible.

The construction list of the Munktells Mekaniska Verkstad includes a total of 31 serial numbers. No. 14 is missing, it is said to have been intended for a conversion of NORBERG in 1866 or for the VAULUNDER locomotive built at Kristinehamns Mekaniska Verkstad . No. 15 was built according to drawings by Kristinehamns Mekaniska Verkstad and No. 27 according to the guidelines of Decauville .

The series from No. 18 to No. 26 differed only in the design of the driver's cab and some fittings and were commissioned by the OFWJ ( Oxelösund – Flen – Västmanlands Järnväg ). With the boilers and machine parts manufactured by Munktells, the OFWJ workshop in Eskilstuna built seven steam railcars between 1883 and 1892 .
