Bergslagskanalen ( German Bergslagskanal ) is a canal in Bergslagen in Sweden between Karlskoga and Filipstad . It consists of a lake system that is connected by several small canals and locks and extends over a total length of about 64 kilometers, of which four kilometers consist of dug canals. The height difference along the entire route is 16 meters, which is overcome by means of six locks. Today it is used exclusively for tourist purposes.
The Bergslag Canal is unique in that it cannot be reached by boat from any other larger body of water, as access via the Timsälven River into Lake Möckeln is blocked by a hydroelectric power station just before the Timsälven mouth. Smaller leisure boats that can navigate the Bergslag Canal must therefore be transported from Vänern by trailer or truck .
The following boat size restrictions apply on the Bergslag Canal:
- maximum length: 20.7 m
- maximum width: 3.6 m
- maximum draft: 1.2 m
- maximum fixed point height : 1.8 m
- Maximum speed in the canal sections: 3 knots (5.5 km / h )
history
In order to facilitate the transport of iron from the mining areas in southeastern Värmland to Kristinehamn , construction of the Norsbäck Canal between Hyttsjön and Bergsjön began as early as 1634, making it one of the oldest canals in Sweden.
