The Hobbit film trilogy is a high fantasy project realized by director Peter Jackson and adapted from the children's book The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien . The three films were released in 2012 ( An Unexpected Journey ), 2013 (The Desolation of Smaug ) and 2014 ( The Battle of the Five Armies ).

After its world premiere on November 28, 2012 in Wellington , The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey was released in Germany on December 13, and one day later in the United States.
