Music from the Hobbit film trilogy

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Howard Shore composed the score for the film.

The music that of director Peter Jackson staged Hobbit -Fimtrilogie was developed by Howard Shore composed and recorded; he was previously responsible for the Lord of the Rings films. As in the films mentioned, the recordings for the first part of the Hobbit films were made by the London Philharmonic Orchestra in Abbey Road Studios . The town hall in Wellington was used for the recording of the second film from September 2013 .

background

After Shore's work on The Lord of the Rings , he actually dealt with the score for Jackson's new film King Kong . Just seven weeks before the premiere of the film, Jackson changed composers due to "different creative views": the American James Newton Howard took over Shore's job. Because Howard only had two weeks to complete a new soundtrack, many of the songs were taken over by Shore. Despite the differences at the time, Peter Jackson and Howard Shore stayed connected and worked together again on the Hobbit film.

The soundtrack was generally positively received, rather small things were criticized. For example, the similarity between the music in the Lord of the Rings trilogy was praised. An example of this is the recording of the title An Ancient Enemy , which can be heard during the battle scenes at the gates of Moria . A similar sounding musical accompaniment could already be heard in Lord of the Rings . One point of criticism is the lack of clear leitmotifs :

"Unfortunately, laypeople can hardly make out clear leitmotifs, such as their own Azog or Goblin King theme."

- Stefan Servos : Herr-der-Ringe-Film.de

Patsy Morita from Allmusic writes a. a. about the connection to the Lord of the Rings films:

“[…] As with The Lord of the Rings films, the music is lush and richly orchestral - with the occasional choir - utilizing similarly pastoral themes for the hobbits and rhythmic, suspenseful ones for the threatening creatures and characters […]. The overall scope of Shore's music isn't quite as sweeping and epic as that for The Lord of the Rings, perhaps a natural reflection of the smaller scale of Bilbo's adventures with the ring when compared to its fuller story as laid out in Lord of the Rings. Yet, it still has some grandeur and hits all the right emotional notes [...]. "

"[...] As with the Lord of the Rings films, the film music is extensive, very orchestral, rhythmic and assigned to some threatening creatures - at the same time, choirs are also used [...]. However, the overall soundtrack is not as gripping and epic as in The Lord of the Rings , perhaps due to the fact that Bilbo Baggins' story of getting to the ring is less exciting than the one in The Lord of the Rings . Despite all this, the film music has its own splendor and hits the right emotional nerve [...]. "

The song of the Lonely Mountain was nominated for a Houston Film Critics Society Award , but Skyfall from the James Bond film of the same name ultimately won . Howard Shore was also nominated for a Saturn Award in the “ Best Music ” category.

reception

criticism

The soundtrack was received just as positively as the music from An Unexpected Journey . Was praised u. a. the consistent incorporation of topics that fit well with those of the previous four Middle-earth films:

“The new Elben material and the soundscape of Seestadt, not least the thematic diversity of Smaug, may lack long, memorable“ hump phrases ”, but are in no way inferior to their relatives from the LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy. Shore's interpretation of a wasteland is a real feast for pricked ears, which gains in sound complexity, especially towards the end, and which is already a classic of film music. "

- Eorl87 : herr-der-ringe-film.de

James Christopher Monger from Allmusic writes a. a. about the changes to the soundtrack of the first film.

"[...] For The Desolation of Smaug , Shore honed the themes introduced in An Unexpected Journey and amped up the darkness and bombast, introducing a memorable new cue to accompany the arrival of the film's scaly antagonist."

"[...] For the Desolation of Smaug , Shore tweaked the themes introduced in An Unexpected Journey and added the new darkness of the film by introducing unforgettable new things to accompany the arrival of the antagonists in the film."
