Local history

Mindergangelt used to belong to the Jülich office of Millen . In 1343 the place was assigned to the interest district Gangelt of the rule Heinsberg , as well as the judicial district and the parish .

In 1828, Mindergangelt had a total of 58 inhabitants, in 1852 there were 63 inhabitants. Mindergangelt formed the community Gangelt with the places Gangelt , Hastenrath , Hohenbusch , Kievelberg , Kreuzrath , Niederbusch and Vinteln .

From 1948, Mindergangelt belonged to the Netherlands for about 15 years. During this time, the national border separated Gangelt, which remained with Germany, and Mindergangelt, which was added to the Dutch Drostambt Tudderen together with the Selfkant (see also: Dutch annexation plans after the Second World War ). It was not until August 1963 that the Netherlands returned the Selfkant to Germany. As the only village in this area, Mindergangelt came to the municipality of Gangelt, all other previously Dutch places came to the new German municipality of Selfkant. With the law on the restructuring of communities in the Selfkant district of Geilenkirchen-Heinsberg of June 24, 1969, Mindergangelt was able to remain in the Gangelt community on July 1, 1969.

Church history

The parish of St. Nikolaus Gangelt is made up of the towns and districts Gangelt with Claessen, Kreuzrath, Mindergangelt, Oberheide, Thyssen, Unterheide and Vinteln. The majority of the population consists of Catholics .

In 1268 Theodoric II von Heinsberg gave the church the patronage right to the Premonstratensian monastery in Heinsberg . In 1343/44 the Gangelt church was incorporated into the Heinsberg monastery . From then on, Premonstratensians were mostly pastors here until the monasteries were dissolved in 1802. After that, the parish belonged to the canton of Geilenkirchen in the new diocese of Aachen , later to the archbishopric of Cologne and again in 1925 to the diocese of Aachen.

In the course of the parish reforms in the Diocese of Aachen, the parish of St. Nikolaus Gangelt was incorporated into the community of the Catholic parishes of Gangelt.
