Local history
Schierwaldenrath used to belong to the Jülich office of Millen . The place name interpretation can be seen in connection with the original affiliation of Schierwaldenrath to the parish and court of Breberen . It is possible that the settlement was built from Waldenrath in this area that does not belong to its own parish district.
In 1828 Schierwaldenrath had a total of 213 inhabitants, in 1852 there were 249 inhabitants. Schierwaldenrath formed the municipality of Schierwaldenrath with the places Langbroich and Harzelt. With the law on the reorganization of communities of the Selfkantkreis Geilenkirchen-Heinsberg from June 24, 1969, the community Schierwaldenrath was incorporated into the community Gangelt on July 1, 1969.
Schierwaldenrath is a permanent participant in the competition Our village has a future . In 2011, the place was awarded the gold medal at the district level . At the state level, the place won a silver plaque in 2012. The village rightly calls itself Golddorf.
Church history
The parish of St. Anna Schierwaldenrath has been independent since 1804. The majority of the population consists of Catholics .
In 1789, the residents of Schierwaldenrath petitioned their local pastor from Breberen to support the construction of their own chapel . Because of the long way to the church, he complied with this request. In 1804 Schierwaldenrath was raised to an independent parish. Between 1887 and 1888, the chapel built in 1790 was replaced by a new church based on plans by Erasmus Schüller and consecrated on July 30, 1889.
In the course of the parish reforms in the Diocese of Aachen , the formerly independent Catholic parish of St. Anna Schierwaldenrath was incorporated into the community of the Catholic parishes of Gangelt.
