Local history
Brüxgen used to belong to the Jülich office of Millen . The court and the Catholic parish were located in Gangelt. It is known from family histories that linen weaving and (blue) dyeing played an important role in Brüxgen during the 18th and 19th centuries. Nothing is known about the older local history.
In 1828, Brüxgen had a total of 209 inhabitants, in 1852 there were 242 inhabitants. Brüxgen formed after the Second World War with the places Breberen , Broichhoven , Buscher Heide , Nachbarheid and Schümm the community Breberen-Schümm . Until then, Brüxgen was part of the community "Schümmerquartier" (Schümm). With the law on the reorganization of communities in the Selfkant district of Geilenkirchen-Heinsberg of June 24, 1969, the community of Breberen-Schümm was incorporated into the community of Gangelt on July 1, 1969. The legal successor is the community of Gangelt.
Church history
The parish of St. Maternus Breberen today includes the places Breberen, Broichhoven, Buscherheide, Nachbarheid and, since the 19th century, also Brüxgen and Schümm. The majority of the population in the parish are Catholics .
The parish is mentioned in a document in 1079. The Lords of Millen were the landlords . In 1282 the manor was sold to the von Heinsberg family . The patronage of the church was connected with this. In 1492 the church was incorporated into the Heinsberg Gangolfuss pen, which also owned the tithe . After belonging to the Diocese of Liège , the Archdiocese of Cologne and now the Diocese of Aachen , Breberen has been part of the Gangelt deanery since 1925 . The current church was built around 1830 and blown up on October 18, 1944 during World War II . In 1954 the church was rebuilt with a new facade and a west tower .
In the course of the parish reforms in the diocese of Aachen, the formerly independent Catholic parish of St. Maternus Breberen was incorporated into the community of the Catholic. Gangelt parishes incorporated.
