Dan Hennah

Dan Hennah (* in Hastings , New Zealand ) is a New Zealand architect , art director and production designer who has won an Oscar , twice the Excellence in Production Design Award from the Art Directors Guild , a Sierra Award and a Golden Satellite Award .

Life

After attending school, Hennah studied architecture at the Polytechnic School of Architecture in Wellington . He began his career as art director and production designer in the film industry in 1983 for the film Nate and Hayes and has worked on the stage set for nearly forty films to date.

At the 2002 Academy Awards , he was nominated for the Oscar for Best Design for the first time with Grant Major , for The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001) by Peter Jackson with Elijah Wood , Ian McKellen and Sean Astin . At the same time, the two were nominated for the Excellence in Production Design Award from the Art Directors Guild (ADG) and a Golden Satellite Award in 2002.

In 2003 he, Major and Alan Lee received an Oscar nomination for best production design in The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002), which was again directed by Peter Jackson with Elijah Wood, Ian McKellen and Sean Astin in the lead roles . In addition, he and Major won the ADG Excellence in Production Design Award .

At the 2004 Academy Awards , Hennah, Major and Lee won the Oscar for Best Design in The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003), which in turn was filmed by Peter Jackson and starred alongside Viggo Mortensen , Liv Tyler and Ian McKellen also starred Elijah Wood and Sean Astin. For this film, he and Major and their staff also received another ADG Excellence in Production Design Award and, together with Lee, a Golden Satellite Award .

For the film King Kong (2005) by Peter Jackson with Naomi Watts , Jack Black and Adrien Brody , he, Major and Simon Bright were nominated for another Oscar in 2006 for best production design and another ADG Excellence in Production Design Award . He and Bright also won a Sierra Award from the Las Vegas Film Critics Society for best art direction.

Hennah later worked on the staging of cinematic adaptations of JRR Tolkien's The Hobbit , directed by Peter Jackson, which were performed in three parts from 2012. For the first part, The Hobbit - An Unexpected Journey , Hennah, along with Simon Bright and Ra Vincent, was nominated for the Oscar in the category "Best Production Design" at the 2013 Academy Awards.
