Mayiladuthurai ( Tamil : மயிலாடுதுறை Mayilāṭutuṟai [ ˈmajilaːɖɯd̪urɛi ]), formerly Mayuram ( மாயூரம் Māyūram [ ˈmaːjuːɾʌm ]) or Mayavaram ( மாயவரம் Māyavram [ ˈmaːjəʋaɾʌm ]), is a city in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu . The population is around 86,000 (2011 census).

Mayiladuthurai belongs to the Nagapattinam district of the state of Tamil Nadu and is located around 280 kilometers south of Chennai in the Kaveri Delta on an estuary of the Kaveri River. The next largest cities are Kumbakonam 35 kilometers west, Chidambaram 40 kilometers north and Tiruvarur 40 kilometers south. The coast of the Bay of Bengal is 25 kilometers to the east. Located on the main route from Viluppuram via Cuddalore to Tiruchirappalli , Mayiladuthurai has good rail connections. The branch line to Tiruvarur also branches off at Mayiladuthurai station.

Formerly known under the Sanskrit name Mayuram , the name of the city was changed to the Tamil form Mayiladuthurai in the 1970s by the Tamil Nadu government for linguistic reasons . The place was already under this name in the 7th / 8th centuries. Century was sung in the Tevaram hymns of the hymn poets Sambandar and Appar . Mayiladuthurai is one of the 274 holy places of Tamil Shaivism ( Padal Petra Sthalams ). Both names are derived from the word for "peacock" (Sanskrit: mayūra, Tamil: mayil ). The name is related to the myth according to which the goddess Parvati is said to have worshiped her husband Shiva in the form of a peacock.

The most important temple of Mayiladuthurai is dedicated to Shiva in his appearance as Mayuranathaswami ("Peacock Lord"). The Mayuranathaswami Temple is over three hectares and has a 50 meter high gopuram (gate tower). Every year in October / November the Tula Festival takes place, where the deity is brought in procession to the Kaveri River and bathed there. On the other side of the river in the suburb of Tiruvindalur is the Parimala Ranganathar Temple, where the god Vishnu is worshiped. It belongs to the 108 Divya Desams , the holy places of Tamil Vishnuism .

89 percent of Mayiladuthurai's residents are Hindus , 6 percent Muslim and 4 percent Christian . As in all of Tamil Nadu, the main language is Tamil, which is spoken by 98 percent of the population as their mother tongue.
