Viluppuram ( Tamil : விழுப்புரம் Viḻuppuram [ ˈʋɨɻɯpːuɾʌm ]; also: Villupuram ) is a city in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu . It is located in northwest Tamil Nadu, not far from the coast of the Bay of Bengal, around 150 kilometers southwest of the capital Chennai (Madras). The next larger city is Puducherry (Pondicherry) about 35 kilometers east. Viluppuram is the capital of the district of the same name . The population is around 96,000 (2011 census).

Viluppuram is an important railroad crossing connecting Chennai with southern Tamil Nadu. The main line from Chennai to Tiruchirappalli passes through Viluppuram, and branch lines to Puducherry, Cuddalore and Tiruvannamalai also leave the city's train station . The national highway NH 45 from Chennai to Tiruchirappalli also runs through Viluppuram.

78 percent of Viluppuram's residents are Hindus , 15 percent are Muslims and 6 percent are Christians . As in all of Tamil Nadu, the main language is Tamil, which is spoken by 93 percent of the population as their mother tongue. 3 percent each speak Urdu and Telugu .
