The city of Taitung is located on the southeastern coast of Taiwan in Taitung County, of which it is the capital. The Beinan River ( Beinanxi , 卑南溪) flows through the urban area and flows into the Pacific. The urban area extends predominantly south or southwest of the river. Only the two districts of Fufeng (富 豐) and Fugang (富 岡) are north and northeast of the river. Towards the hinterland, the city is bounded in the northwest by the southern foothills of the Haian Coast Mountains and in the southwest by the foothills of the Taiwan Central Mountains. The neighboring communities are Beinan in the north and west and Taimali in the south.

history

American map of Taitung (then Japanese Taito ) from 1945

The original inhabitants of the Taitung Plain were the indigenous peoples of the Puyuma and the Yanks . In the Formosa languages of the Ami and the Puyuma, the place is called 'Pusung'. It was not until the late 19th century that Han Chinese settled here. The first Han Chinese settlement was Po Sang (寶 桑) - now a district in downtown Taitung - and was established during the Tongzhi Restoration period in the 1860s. After the end of Japanese rule over Taiwan (1895-1945), the new government of the Republic of China renamed the settlement “Taitung” (臺 東). In 1976 Taitung was raised from a township (鎮, zhèn ) to a town (市, shi ) after passing the 100,000-inhabitant mark .

Facilities and sights

Taitung National University is located in Taitung . Extensive prehistoric finds were made in the area of what is now the district of Beinan in July 1980 during the expansion work for the train station. After years of excavation, today's National Museum of Prehistoric Culture of Taiwan was opened in 2002 on the basis of these findings .
