Lu Dao , also Lyudao and Green Island ( Chinese  綠島  /  绿岛 , Pinyin lǜ dǎo , Tongyong Pinyin Lyu dǎo , W.-G. Lu Tao , Zhuyin ㄌ ㄩ 'ㄉ ㄠ , PEH OE jī LEK-tó  - "Green island"), also known by the English name Green Iceland is a good 15 square kilometers large volcanic island south-east of Taiwan . The island, administered by the Republic of China (Taiwan) as the rural community Lüdao ( 綠島 鄉 , Lǜdǎo Xiāng ) in Taitung County , is located about 33 km east of the port city of Taitung in the Pacific . The population is around 3500 (as of 2013). There are regular ferry connections between Taitung and Lü Dao. From the small island airport Lü Dao there is on average more than one flight to Taitung every day.

history

Samasana Insel , from A journey into the interior of the island of Formosa (1905), a book by the German explorer Karl Theodor Stöpel

The island was originally inhabited by the indigenous people of the Amis and was called by them Sanasai. The Chinese called it island burned by fire ( 火燒 島 Huǒshāo Dǎo or 火燒 嶼 Huǒshāo Yǔ ). At the time of the Japanese colonial rule in Taiwan (1895-1945) it was named Kashō-tō ( 火燒 島 ). The current name Lü Dao was given to her on August 1, 1949 by the then district administrator of Taitung County, Huang Shih-hung ( 黃 式 鴻 ).

Several shipwrecks occurred in the area of the island. In March 1864 the British brig Susan Douglas ran aground here . The islanders welcomed the crew in a friendly way (which was not always the case with shipwrecked people on the island of Taiwan). After a month on the island, the castaways could be picked up by other British ships.
On December 11, 1937 at 1:00 a.m., the 21,000 RT cruise ship President Hoover on the way from San Francisco to Manila ran aground on the northeast coast of what was then Kashō-tō with 503 passengers on board and a crew of 330 . The crew and all passengers were rescued on land with the active help of the islanders. On December 14 and 15, 1937, the stranded people were evacuated from the island by the two US ships President McKinley and President Pierce . The wrecked ship was later sold to the Japanese government and scrapped on site.

Prison island

At the time of martial law in the Republic of China, which lasted until 1987 , Lü Dao was primarily known as a prison island. Numerous political prisoners , but also common criminals, were held on the island . Prominent inmates were the later chairman of the Democratic Progressive Party , Shih Ming-teh , and the author Bo Yang . Today the prisons are closed and tourism is the main source of income for the islanders. The human rights memorial park ( 綠島 人權 紀念 園區 , English Green Island Human Rights Memorial Park ) commemorates the time as a prison island .

On the "Green Island", which is overgrown with tropical vegetation, the hot salt water springs of Zhaori ( 朝日 溫泉 ) in the southeast directly by the sea and the rock formations along the east coast are among the main attractions. The lighthouse at the northwestern tip was built as a donation from the USA , as thanks for the rescuing of the President Hoover's passengers by the local population.
