The Lu Dao airport ( Chinese 綠島機場 , pinyin Lǜdǎo Jīchǎng ) is a small island airport on the Taitung County belonging island Lu Dao (the "Green Island") in the Republic of China (Taiwan) .
history
The airport was established in 1972 and was initially under the garrison command of the Taiwan Province (臺灣 警備 總 司令部), an organization of the security police of the Republic of China. Until 1977 the airport was expanded with funds from the Central Airport Authority (CAA) of Taiwan and the provincial government of Taiwan . From 1984 the airport belonged to Taitung County. From July 1990 it came under the direction of the Central Airport Authority again and was expanded considerably by 1995.
Since then, the airport has had a runway measuring 917 meters × 23 meters. The apron covers 8130 m² and the terminal building 985 m². Take-offs and landings are only possible in daylight, as the airport does not have night lights . Administratively, the airport is under the administration of the Taitung Airport Authority, which is responsible for the three airports Taitung , Lü Dao and Lan Yu .
Flight connections
The only connection served from the airport is the connection to the nearby Taitung Airport , which Daily Air serves several times a day. The flight takes only 15 minutes. However, flights have to be canceled more frequently, especially during the monsoon season, due to unfavorable weather conditions.
Incidents
The most serious incident at or near Lü Dao Airport occurred on January 19, 1988, when a Pilatus Britten-Norman BN-2A-26 Islander of Taiwan Airlines (part of Uni Air since 1998 ) crashed while approaching the airport. 10 out of 11 inmates were killed. Other accidents did not result in personal injuries, but in some cases up to a total loss of the aircraft.
