The Airport Taitung ( Chinese  臺東機場 , pinyin Taidong Jīchǎng , English Taitung Airport ), unofficially Fengnian -airport (豐年機場) is a small domestic airport in the city of Taitung in the Republic of China on Taiwan . Taitung Airport is located in the western part of the city area. In addition, there is a larger military airport in Taitung, the Zhihang Air Force Base (空軍 志 航 基地), which is located in the eastern part of the city near the coast.

history

As early as the 1970s there was a small airfield in Taitung, which was officially granted the status of an airport on July 1, 1981. A few months later, civil aviation was relocated to its current location in the Fengnian (豐年 里) district. The old airfield continued to be used by the Taiwanese Air Force and later developed into the Zhihang Air Force Base. On June 1, 2001, Taitung Airport, along with Hualien Airport, was upgraded to a "Second Tier Airport". This was done as part of a program of the Taiwanese government for the tourist and economic development of the regions on the east coast. The number of air passengers has risen continuously since it was founded and in 2001 reached its all-time high of 948,000. In 2007 it was only 457,000 and has since decreased to 300,000 in 2016.
