The Hualien Airport ( Chinese  花蓮機場 , pinyin Hualian Jīchǎng , English Hualien Airport ) is a small airport near the city of Hualien in the Republic of China on Taiwan .

history

Hualien Airport was officially opened on May 16, 1962. The construction took place as part of a government program to promote economic development in the eastern regions of Taiwan and to promote domestic air traffic. The airport site is not in the urban area of Hualien, but directly to the north in the neighboring municipality of Xincheng . On April 27, 2001, the government approved the establishment of charter flights between Hualien and Japan. On March 18, 2004, the new terminal building of the airport was inaugurated and it went into operation on March 19, 2004. With its distinctive architecture, which is supposed to be reminiscent of a bird soaring with its wings outstretched, the building is considered an architectural landmark of Hualien. There are considerations to develop the airport into a full-fledged international airport in order to promote international tourism on the east coast of Taiwan. However, the number of passengers has been declining over the long term for 20 years. While the airport still counted 407,000 passengers in 1971 and reached a high of 1.86 million in 1997, it was only 116,000 in 2016. The reason for this is the significantly improved rail and road connections, which have meant that Hualien can be reached from the metropolises and international airports on Taiwan's west coast in just a few hours by rail or by car. For example, Taipei is only a 3 hour train ride from Hualien.

location

The airport site is located in the Xincheng municipality in the immediate vicinity of the provincial expressway 9 and not far from the Beipu train station . There is regular bus service between the airport and Hualien Railway Station .

Airlines and connections

The airport is served by the airlines Mandarin Airlines , Uni Air , Air Busan , Eastar Jet and Sky Angkor Airlines . There are scheduled flights from Hualien to Kaohsiung , Taipei-Songshan , Taichung , Ulsan , Seoul and Phnom Penh .

Incidents

  • On October 26, 1989, the most serious accident occurred at or near the airport when a Boeing 737-209 operated by China Airlines ( B-180 ) about 5.5 kilometers north of the airport, three minutes after take-off at an altitude of was flown against Mount Chiashan about 2100 meters above sea level and crashed there. All 54 aircraft occupants (7 crew members, 47 passengers) were killed. The cause of the accident was determined to be that the pilots had mistakenly selected the wrong departure procedure and had flown a left turn instead of a right turn. The accident was thus a controlled flight into terrain ( " Controlled flight into terrain ," CFIT).
