The airport, which was initially used as a military base, developed together with Taipei into an important transport hub. After the completion of the international airport near Taoyuan in 1979, Songshan only handled national passenger flights within Taiwan and the surrounding islands belonging to the Republic of China.

The commissioning of the first section of the Taiwan High Speed Rail , which runs along Taipei along the west coast of Taiwan a. a. with Taichung , Chiayi , Tainan and Kaohsiung (Zuoying), initiated a sharp decline in passenger numbers to these destinations. Most of the affected connections have been deleted. With the start of charter connections to destinations in the People's Republic of China in 2008 and better transport links between the airport and the underground network in 2009, the airport became more attractive again.

Transport links

There are separate stopping areas for taxis, city and intercity buses and a parking lot directly in front of the main building. Taxis that drop off passengers at the airport are not allowed to take new passengers with them immediately, but have to "queue". Especially when it rains, it can be worthwhile to take the short walk to the airport exit instead of waiting in line at the main building, as taxis are often available at the nearby petrol station entrance. Intercity buses are marked with the name of the place of departure and destination (often only in Chinese, sometimes also transcribed in Latin letters), city buses also have route numbers.

A shuttle bus runs to and from Taipei-Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport , the journey takes about 1 hour for a direct journey (KuoKuang or FreeGo Bus), with stops in Taipei correspondingly longer (Yatung or Toward You Air Bus).

The airport has direct access to Taipei's subway network . There is an underground station on the brown Neihu Line immediately in front of the terminal.
