Songshan ( Chinese 松山區 , Pinyin Sōngshān Qū , Pe̍h-ōe-jī Siông-san Khu ) is a central district of the Taiwanese capital Taipei .
Surname
The former Taiwanese place name was Sik-kháu (錫 口). It was derived from the language of a former indigenous tribe and originally meant "river bend". At the time of Japanese rule over Taiwan, the place was renamed Matsuyama (Japanese: 松山) in 1920 . After the Second World War, the characters of the Japanese place name were retained, but now with the Chinese pronunciation Songshan .
Location and importance
Songshan is located in the center of Taipei City. The district borders the neighboring Da'an and Xinyi districts to the south, Neihu and Nangang to the east, and Zhongshan district to the north and west . There are several large department stores, shopping streets, night markets and banks in Songshan . Taipei Songshan Airport , one of the most important domestic airports in Taiwan, is located in the district . The airlines Mandarin Airlines , Daily Air and Far Eastern Air Transport are based in Songshan. Songshan is connected to Taipei's subway network and Highway 1 .
