Metro Taipei ( Chinese  臺北 捷運 , Pinyin Táiběi Jiéyùn ), or Taipei MRT (for Mass Rapid Transit ), is the name of the subway network in Taipei , the capital of Taiwan . The routes are underground, at ground level and on stilts. The Taipei Metro is the responsibility of the Taipei Rapid Transit Corporation (TRTC). It connects a total of 131 stations in Taipei and New Taipei on five lines with a total length of 152.9 km (as of 2020). Other routes are under construction or in planning.

Routing

The route network (as of January 2018) consists of five main lines, which are numbered in the order in which they were opened. In addition, each line has a proper name, which is derived from the crossed city districts of Taipei and New Taipei, as well as a color code that is used in timetables and for visual identification on site. The network is supplemented by two branch lines on which the trains shuttle between two neighboring stations. The network is linked to the Taoyuan Metro , whose airport line, which opened in 2017, connects the center of Taipei and parts of New Taipei with Taiwan Taoyuan Airport , but which is not part of the Taipei Metro.

Line 1 (Wenhu Line, brown)

The brown line or Wenhu Line (from Wen shan-Nei hu ) connects the southeastern Muzha district of Wenshan District with the northeastern Neihu and Nangang districts . The southern section between Taipei Zoo in Muzha and Zhongshan Junior High School in Songshan District opened in 1996 as the first line on Taipei Metro. This is followed in the north-east by the Neihu Line , which opened in 2009 and runs via Songshan Airport and the Neihu District to the Exhibition Center in Nangang.

The brown line has a total of 24 stations, all of which are in the urban area of Taipei. All trains run continuously on the entire route. In contrast to the other lines designed as high-load systems, the Wenhu line is designed as a medium-load system. With the exception of two tunnels, in the airport area and in the south when crossing a mountain ridge, it is elevated above ground.

Line 2 (Tamsui Xinyi Line, red)

The 22.8 km long red Tamsui-Xinyi line , which runs underground in downtown Taipei and above ground to the north along the route of a former railway line, has been in operation since 1998. The northern branch ( Tamsui Line ) with 22 stops over 23.5 km connects Tamsui with the main train station and the National Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall . Since November 24, 2013, it has been moving into the inner-city branch ( Xinyi line ). With 6 further stations over a distance of 5.7 km, a direct connection was created to the Taipei 101 high-rise building and the Xiangshan terminus in the Xinyi district .

Xinbeitou branch line

The 1.2 km long above-ground pink branch line Xinbeitou , opened in 1997, branches off the red Tamsui line at Beitou station . The trains commuting between the Taipeher District Beitou past two stations Beitou and Xinbeitou.

The orange line is an important north-south connection with connection to the new suburbs in New Taipei . Since 1999 the starting point has been the Nanshijiao station in the south (“Zhonghe” line to Guting); This has been crossing the important east-west connection at the Zhongxiao-Xinsheng station as the “Xinlu” line since 2012. At the station Daqiaotou in the northwest of Taipei, the line splits into to Luzhou going Luzhou Line (since 2010) and by Huilong in Xinzhuang leading Xinzhuang Line (completed in 2013). A total of 25 stops are served over a distance of 29.3 km.

Line 5 (Bannan Line, blue)

The completely underground blue line, which opened in several steps between 1999 and 2015, is the most important east-west route in the metro network. It connects the Nangang district in eastern Taipei with the southwestern suburbs of Banqiao and Tucheng . The non-stop trains stop at 23 stations, 14 of which are in Taipei, five in Banqiao and four in Tucheng.

You can change to the red line at Taipei Central Station, to the northern section of the orange Luzhou-Xinzhuang lines at the Zhongxiao-Xinsheng station to the east , to the brown Wenhu line at the Zhongxiao-Fuxing station further east and at the eastern end of the line at the Nangang Exhibition Center and to the Xiaonanmen branch line at Ximen Station to the west .

In 1999, the 18.3 km long Bannan Line (from Ban qiao Nan gang) between Xinpu stations in Banqiao and Kunyang in Nangang District was opened as the first section of the blue line. The 5.5 km long Tucheng Line as a southwestern extension from Xinpu to Yongning station in Tucheng was completed in 2005, and in 2015 it was extended to today's Dingpu terminus . In the east, the line was extended from Kunyang to Nangang Station in 2008 and further to the Nangang Exhibition Center in 2011 .

business

The metro runs daily from 6:00 a.m. to midnight; there is no night traffic.

Access to the platforms is secured by barriers. For a single journey, an RFID plastic chip is purchased from machines at the departure station . The lock is opened by placing the chip on a sensor field. At the destination station, the chip is thrown into a slot to open the lock. Within the secure area there are machines for subsequent payment. Alternatively, a rechargeable season ticket, the Easycard (manufacturer: Philips, type: Mifare) can be used, which is also valid on city bus routes and some - rare - taxis. The same system is used for the MRT Kaohsiung , the Suica card of the Japanese railway company JR East , the Octopus card of the MTR in Hong Kong and the EZ-link card of the MRT in Singapore .

Depending on the distance, the fares are graduated from 20 TWD to 65 TWD in 5 TWD steps. There are discounts on the use of the Easycard as well as for seniors (older than 65 years), children, schoolchildren / students, the disabled and for groups of 10 or 40 people. In addition, a day ticket is offered at a price of 200 TWD.

Announcements on the trains are made in four languages, standard Chinese , Taiwanese , Hakka and English . In addition, the stations are shown in Chinese and English by illuminated displays above the doors . In many stations, especially the heavily frequented transfer stations, automatic platform screen doors are installed that only open after a train has stopped.

Other means of transportation are the Central Railway Station (to the railroad, Taipei intercity bus terminal, and Taiwan High Speed Rail HSR) and Banqiao train stations (to Banciao intercity bus terminal and HSR), Songshan, and Nangang. City buses stop in the immediate vicinity of almost all stations. At the main train station and at the Sanchong station of the orange line there is a transfer option to the airport line of the Taoyuan Metro .

expansion

Planned expansion of the metro network

The extension of several underground lines is currently under construction. The underground stations are built using the cut-and-cover method, while the tunnels are mostly drilled. Outside of the city center, the lines are run inexpensively above ground. The yellow ring line will be designed as a medium load line and, in the final stage, will form a ring around Taipei. Since the route runs both in the urban area and through New Taipei (the surrounding former Taipei County ), various local licensing authorities are involved in the process.
