Xinyi ( Chinese  信義 區 , Pinyin Xìnyì Qū ) is a district in the center of Taipei . It has about 227,000 inhabitants on an area of 11 km². Xinyi is home to Taipei City Hall, Taipei 101 , Taipei World Trade Center , Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, and other buildings. This makes Xinyi a center for politics and business.

history

Xinyi originally belonged to the Songshan District , which was founded in 1920. The hamlets of Zhongpo, Wufenpu, Sanzhangli and Xingya were located in today's area of Xinyi. In 1938, Songshan Village was incorporated into Taipei City. Since the Songshan district with over 450,000 inhabitants already housed a fifth of the population of Taipei at the end of the 1980s, Xinyi was detached from the southern half of the district in 1990.
