The airport was built by the army in 1945 during the Japanese colonial era . In 1965 the Civil Aeronautics Administration took over the airport. So the first domestic flights started.
During the 1970s and 1980s, the international destinations decreased significantly. Only Hong Kong and Tokyo were served . The connection to Taipei was established in the early 1990s. This offered the southern Taiwanese more comfort and service, as more international destinations are offered from Taipei. Southeast Asian destinations are currently being offered step by step, as the time required from south to north and then from north to further south was too high. This contributed to a large number of passengers at the airport, so that in 1997 the international terminal was opened.
In 1998 EVA Air opened a connection to Los Angeles . However, it was discontinued three months later due to a lack of passengers. Northwest Airlines offered connections to Osaka and Tokyo three years later . However, they were also suspended due to a passenger shortage due to the September 11th terrorist attacks . For these reasons, the number of passengers has decreased drastically since 1997.
Since the opening of the Taiwan High Speed Rail in 2007, which enables a north-south connection in Taiwan, the number of passengers has fallen sharply due to the numerous domestic connections. Several airlines went bankrupt . Most airlines see hope of flying to Japan , Korea, or mainland China .
