The Lan Yu Airport ( Chinese  蘭嶼機場 , pinyin Lányǔ Jīchǎng ) is a small airport on the "Orchid Island" Lan Yu that the Taitung County of Republic of China (Taiwan) is one.

history

After the establishment of the Republic of China on Taiwan, the entire island of Lan Yu was initially under military administration. In 1964 a small airport was built. The airport was handed over to the Central Airports Authority (CAA) of Taiwan in 1977. An expansion took place until 1982 and from 1984 the airport was under the supervision of Taitung County. Since 1990 the airport has been operated by the CAA again.

The airport has a runway measuring 1132 × 24 meters. The apron covers 6875 m² and the waiting hall 1042 m².

Flight destinations and routes

The only flight destination is Taitung Airport, about 92 kilometers away . By Daily Air about three to six flights are offered daily.

Accidents

The most serious aircraft accident near the airport occurred on April 10, 1992, when a Britten-Norman BN-2A-26 Islander of Taiwan Airlines (part of Uni Air since 1998 ) apparently suffered an engine failure and crashed into the sea near the island. Seven of the ten inmates were killed. Further accidents at the airport only resulted in property damage and not serious personal injury. A constant problem are relatively strong cross winds at the airport, which is located directly near the coast.
