Guanshan ( Chinese  關山鎮 , Pinyin Guanshan Zhen , W.-G. Kuan 1 -Shan 1 Chen 4 ) is a town in Taitung County on Taiwan ( Republic of China ).

Location, geography and climate

Guanshan is located in the southern section of the Huatung Valley , which extends parallel to the east coast of Taiwan. Guanshan has a maximum north-south extension of 14.7 kilometers and a maximum east-west extension of about 8 kilometers. The community is bounded to the west by the foothills of the central mountain range of Taiwan and to the east by the Haian Mountains . In the middle of the valley lies the river bed of the Beinan River . Guanshan is the only township (鎮, Zhèn ) in Taitung County besides Chenggong . The neighboring parishes are the rural parishes of Chishang , Donghe , Luye, and Haiduan (clockwise from the north) . The local climate is tropical and warm and characterized by the monsoons (see the climate diagram of nearby Chenggong). The annual average temperature is 23–24 ° C and the annual precipitation is over 2000 mm.

history

The original inhabitants of the area are the Yanks . The place was originally called Liyu ( 里 壠 ), which comes from the Ami language and is said to designate a worm Tubifex hattai . In the late phase of the Qing Dynasty , an increasing number of Han Chinese settled in the area. In 1937, at the time of Japanese colonial rule , the community was renamed Guanshan ( 關 山 , "from the mountain") and this name was continued after the Republic of China took over the island of Taiwan (1945).

Guanshan has about 8700 inhabitants (2018). The population has been declining for decades, mainly due to rural exodus. Guanshan had the highest population with 16221 inhabitants in 1968. The population is multiethnic. At the end of 2017, 2,326 members of indigenous peoples (mainly Amis ) lived in Guanshan (around 27% of the total population). Most of the rest of the population were Han Chinese. The Han are predominantly Buddhists and Taoists , while the indigenous people are mostly of Christian faith. In 2010 the following languages ​​were spoken in Guanshan (people over 5 years of age, multiple answers possible): Mandarin 91.6%, Taiwanese 62.2%, Formosa languages 31.5%, Hakka 20.0%, others 10.3% .

Guanshan is divided into 7 districts (里, ): Degao (德 高 里), Xinfu (新 福 里), Zhongfu (中 福 里), Fengguan (豐泉 里), Lilong (里 壠 里), Yuemei (月眉 里) and Dianguang (電光 里).

Agriculture

Although formally a township, Guanshan is very agricultural. Cultivated rice , red sugar cane , lemons , bananas , plums , passion fruit , Bergland pears ( 高接梨 ), peaches , avocados , strawberries , tomatoes , etc. The commercial operations at the site are involved in the processing of agricultural products.

traffic

Provincial Road 9 runs through Guanshan in a north-south direction. Provincial road 20 branches off from it in the north. The Taitung Line ( 花 東線 ) of the Taiwanese Railway also runs in a north-south direction . Guanshan and north of it Haiduan are railway stations.

Tourism

Tourist attractions and sights include the Guanshan Water Park ( 親水 公園 ), the Guanshan Train Station from the Japanese colonial era, the Tinhau Temple ( 天 后宮 ) from 1895 and various natural attractions.
