Chenggong ( Chinese 成功鎮 , Pinyin Chenggong Zhen ) is a town in Taitung County on Taiwan ( Republic of China ).
Surname
At the place of today's Chenggong there was originally a settlement of the Amis , one of the indigenous peoples of Taiwan . The Ami name of the settlement was transcribed in Chinese 麻 荖 漏 , Moalaulau . During the Japanese rule over Taiwan from 1895 to 1945, a fishing port was built and the settlement was named 新港 街 ( Shinkō machi , "New Port City"). After Taiwan was handed over to the Republic of China in 1945, the place was called Xingang (新港, "New Harbor", the Chinese pronunciation with identical characters). Since there were two other places with this name in Taiwan ( Xingang in Chiayi County and Sinkang - now a city district of Tainan as Sinshih ), the community was renamed after 1945. It was named Chenggong (成功) in honor of the Chinese conqueror Zheng Chenggong (Koxinga ). This literally means "success". Chenggong Zhèn (成功 鎮) is to a certain extent the “city of success” or the “successful city”.
Location, climate
The community consists of an elongated coastal strip, which is separated inland by the Haian Mountains , which run parallel to the coast . The climate is warm and humid and, like that of the rest of the Taitung district, is characterized by the monsoons . The rainy season starts in May and ends in October.

Outline of Chenggong |
population
Archaeological finds indicate human settlement for several millennia. Relics of the Neolithic Changbin culture can be found in some places . The location of Xiaoma is one of the most important sites , along with Baxiandong in the neighboring community of Changbin. The majority (around 50–60%) of today's population belongs to the Amis ethnic group. Accordingly, traditional American folk art and folklore play an important role. According to official surveys in Chenggong in 2010, the languages spoken at home were: 82% Standard Chinese , 55% Hokkien , 42% Indigenous languages , 2% Hakka, and 2% other. Much of the population was multilingual. The population has been declining since at least the 1980s due to emigration and aging.
economy
Chenggong is the most important fishing port on Taiwan's east coast. The main catches are bonito , swordfish , gold mackerel ( mahi mahi ), tuna and cod . Long-term overfishing has caused catch yields to decline continuously in the past. The region's agricultural products include jackfruit , oranges , plums and mandarins .
The main traffic artery is the provincial expressway 11, which crosses the municipality in a north-south direction.
