Dawu ( Chinese 大武鄉 , Pinyin Dàwǔ Xiang , W.-G. Tung 1 ho 2 Hsiang 1 ) is a rural community in Taitung County in Taiwan ( Republic of China ).
Location, geography and climate
Dawu is located on the south coast of Taitung County and consists of an elongated strip of land that is almost 19 kilometers long in its largest longitudinal extent and varies in its transverse extent between 2.6 and 4.8 kilometers. The neighboring communities are Daren in the south and west and Taimali in the north in a very short section . The community borders the Pacific Ocean to the east. Topographically, Dawu consists of a relatively narrow coastal plain that merges further inland into the foothills of the Taiwan Central Mountains.
The climate is tropical and warm and characterized by the monsoons . Dawu is known for its pronounced foehn winds - warm, dry downward winds from the central mountains, which occur mainly from mid-May to mid-June and regularly lead to temperature records being reached in the community for all of Taiwan (up to almost 40 ° C).

Administrative division
Dawu is divided into 5 villages: Dajhu (大 竹村), Daniao (大鳥 村), Nanhsing (南 興村), Dawu (大 武 村) and Shangwu (尚武 村).
population
The original inhabitants of the region were members of the Paiwan indigenous people . Today's population is multi-ethnic. According to the 2010 census, the following languages were spoken in Dawu (multiple answers possible): Mandarin 87.7%, Taiwanese 46.1%, Hakka 1.1%, Formosa languages 41.3%, others 1.4%.
Economy and Infrastructure
The most important traffic artery is Provincial Road 9, which for the most part leads directly along the coast. The other main thoroughfare is the Südverbindungslinie ( 南迴線 ) the Taiwanese railway, the city Taitung with the community Fangliao in Pingtung County crosses connects while Dawu. There is a train station in Dawu Village.
Dawu is characterized by agriculture. Jackfruit , lychee and millet are all grown . Dawu has a small fishing port.
The authorities have been trying to promote tourism for a long time. The nature of Dawu (Pacific coast, mountains) is particularly worth seeing.
