Jinfeng ( Chinese  金峰鄉 , Tongyong Pinyin Jinfong Siang ) is a rural community in Taitung County on Taiwan ( Republic of China ).

Location, geography, climate

Jinfeng is located in the southern part of Taitung County, inland. The maximum east-west extension is about 24 kilometers, the maximum north-south extension almost 20 kilometers. The community is completely inland, but a short section extends up to 1 kilometer from the coast. Jinfeng is almost completely located in the Taiwanese Central Mountains and topographically characterized by strong differences in altitude. Towards the Pacific Ocean, the minimum height above sea level is 150 meters and this increases inland to a maximum of 3092 meters. There are rugged cliffs and deeply cut valleys between high mountains. The climate is tropical, shaped by the monsoons and varies with altitude.

The neighboring communities are Beinan in the north, Taimali in the east, Daren in the south, and Wutai , Majia and Taiwu in the west (the latter three in neighboring Pingtung County ).

history

The subjugation or pacification of the Taiwanese indigenous tribes living here only succeeded during the time of Japanese colonial rule . After the transfer of Taiwan to the Republic of China (1945) 1946 the community was Jinshan formed but on 1 September 1958 because of the same name with a town in Taipei County in Jinfeng has been renamed.

population

With a population density of around 10 people per km², Jinfeng is one of the most sparsely populated communities in Taiwan. Of the almost 3700 inhabitants, around 95% belong to the indigenous peoples (around 85% Paiwan , 10% Rukai ). According to the 2010 census, the following languages ​​were spoken at home (multiple answers possible, people over 5 years of age): Mandarin 95.3%, Formosa languages 73.9%, other 2.9%, Taiwanese 2.3%, Hakka 0, 0%.

Administrative division

Jinfeng is divided into 5 villages (村, Cūn ) (names in Paiwan language, Chinese writing and transcription): Sinapayan (Zhengxing, 正 興村), Kaaluwan (Jialan, 嘉蘭 村), Sapuru / Pudun (Xingxing, 新興 村) , Djumulj / Geomoru (Binmao, 賓 茂 村) and Rulakes (Liqui, 歷 坵 村). Two villages - Sinapayan / Zhengxing and Djumulj / Binmao - are enclaves in the neighboring municipality of Taimali.

Agriculture

The majority of those in employment work in agriculture. However, only about 11 percent of the area is used for agriculture. Are grown, among others millet , Taiwanese red quinoa ( Chenopodium formosanum ), coffee , cinnamon apple and Rosellen .
