Luye

Luye ( Chinese  鹿野鄉 , Pinyin Luye Xiang , W.-G. Lu 4 -yeh 3 Hsiang 1 ) is a rural community in Taitung County on Taiwan ( Republic of China ).

Location, geography

Luye is located at the southern end of the Huatung Valley , an elongated valley that extends parallel to the east coast of Taiwan. In the east the community is bounded by the Haian Mountains and in the west by the foothills of the Taiwanese Central Mountains .

history

The origin of the name Luye is unclear. The original inhabitants of the area were members of the Taiwanese indigenous people of the Yanks . Han Chinese gradually immigrated from mainland China from the 17th century . At the time of the Japanese colonial rule over Taiwan (1895–1945) the agriculture and infrastructure of the area was systematically developed and some processing companies for the agricultural raw materials (sugar, camphor ) were established. After the Republic of China took over Taiwan in 1945 and the Kuomintang were defeated in the Chinese civil war against the communists (until 1949), around 400 Kuomintang supporters who had fled the mainland were settled here in the Luyes area, which significantly changed the population structure.

population

Luye has just under 8,000 inhabitants. Since the community is not predominantly mountainous like other communities in Taitung County, it is a little more densely populated with 80–90 inhabitants per km². At the end of 2017, 2,363 people (almost 30% of the population) belonged to indigenous peoples. The languages spoken at home according to the 2010 census were (people over 5 years of age, multiple answers possible): Mandarin 85.6%, Taiwanese 72.1%, Formosa languages 21.8%, Hakka 10.6%, others 5.2 %.
