Karl Theodor Stöpel

Karl Theodor Stöpel (born March 14, 1862 in Landau ; † 1940 ) was a German economist and explorer.

Life

Karl Theodor Stöpel, son of the large landowner Philipp Stöpel, attended secondary school in Landau and Frankenthal and then worked as a trainee in a bank in Karlsruhe. After completing his military service in 1883/84 he worked in banks in Frankfurt, Berlin, London and Paris. From 1893 to 1896 he studied at the universities of Heidelberg and Berlin. From 1896 to 1899 he went on an extensive study trip through the USA, Cuba, Mexico, where he climbed the Popocatépetl , Hawaii, Taiwan , China, Korea and Siberia. On December 26th, 1898, he was the first to climb Mount Yushan (3,952 m), the highest mountain on the island. From the winter semester of 1899/1900 he studied further at the University of Heidelberg , where he received his doctorate in economics under Karl Rathgen in 1902 . In 1911 he went on a research trip to Ecuador and Colombia, where he did research in San Agustín .
