The Bavarian feather grass ( Stipa pulcherrima subsp. Bavarica ) is an extremely rare grass subspecies from the genus of feather grass ( Stipa ). It reaches a height of about 70 cm and has long gray-green leaves.

It only grows in one location worldwide, a dry grassland in the Finkenstein nature reserve near Neuburg an der Donau . It only grows on an area of around 30 m² with a good 100 clumps and has thus fallen below the critical population size. The local nature conservation authority tries to preserve this subspecies.

features

The leaf sheaths and the underside of the leaf blades are densely covered with short hairs, the upper side rough, the ligula trimmed; the lemma is 23 to 25 mm long with 33 to 41 cm long awns. The hairline on the middle nerve of the lemma is longer than that of the neighboring nerves.

Taxonomy

The taxonomic status of the Bavarian feather grass is controversial: Originally it was described as a separate species Stipa bavarica . It could be a cross between the yellow sheath ( Stipa pulcherrima ) and the soft-haired feather grass ( Stipa dasyphylla ). Today it is usually listed as a subspecies of the yellow-sheathed feather grass, then called Bavarian yellow-sheathed feather grass ( Stipa pulcherrima ssp. Bavarica (Martinovský & H. Scholz) Conert ).
