history
In the 6th and 5th centuries BC The Magadha dynasty resided in the region . Little is known about the medieval history of Sasaram. Sher Khan Suri was born here around 1486, and in the years after 1531 he managed to bring large parts of Bihar and Bengal under his control and in the years 1539 to 1545 even expelled the opium-addicted Mughal Mughal Humayun from Delhi . He tightened and reorganized the Mughal Empire and had large parts of the later Grand Trunk Road laid out and fortified. After his death, the city fell largely insignificant for centuries.
Attractions
- The most important attraction of Sasaram is the Sher Khan Suris mausoleum, which is about 2 km west of the city in an artificial lake. It essentially follows the grave structures of the Lodi dynasty , who resided in Delhi before the Mughals , but exceeds them in size: the square, fortress-like substructure, the octagonal floor plan of the actual grave structure and its two-storey structure with a total of 16 roof pavilions ( chhatris ) are remarkable . At the end there is a dome with an amalaka- like ring and a vase-like attachment ( kalasha ), which, however, cannot be seen in old photos. Originally, the outer walls of the building were entirely covered with blue tiles .
- The similarly designed, but somewhat smaller tomb ( Sukha Roza ) for Hasan Khan Suri, the father of Sher Khan, is only about 500 m to the east . The grave area is surrounded by a wall with an imposing gate .
- The tomb of Islam Shah Suri , the second son and successor of Sher Khan, was never completed; it was about 800 m to the north and was also surrounded by an artificial lake . however, the ruins are quite impressive.
- Surroundings
- Approx. The impressive Rohtasgarh fortress is located 60 km southwest on a mountain plateau above the Son River . Behind an imposing gate ( Hathiya-Pol ) lie the ruins of a palace complex built by Maharaja Man Singh I at the end of the 16th century. One and a half kilometers northeast are the ruins are the remains of three religious buildings ( Ganesh Temple , Rohtasan Temple and Devi Temple ).
Personalities
Around the year 1486, the general and temporary usurper of the Mughal empire Sher Khan Suri was born in Sasaram .
